The salons have not sprung up over a few years but the culture of salons dates back to the 17th and 18th century. It began in France at the close of  the 16th century. Madame de  Rambouillet established the salon in order to elude the court life. The salon gradually turned into a hub of communication among  intellectuals, discussing and exchanging news and  ideas. The salon culture helped people belonging to various social rank and order  mingle. Women occupied an important place in the salon life and it helped them to pursue higher education in life at a time when the society was governed by patriarchy.  Hair have always played a significant cultural and social role. In ancient Egypt men, women and children remained bald in order to protect themselves from the unbearable heat and wore wigs when in public.

Women pulled their long hair back into a chignon and dyed their hair red with henna. They also sprikled some gold powder and used flowers to adorn their hair. Men usually kept their hair short  and occasionally shaved it. In Rome hairdressing became extremely popular.  The upper caste was attended by slaves or visited barber shops.

A thriving salon culture Detroit gave rise to Detroit Hair Wars in 1991. By using human and synthetic hair, elaborate head pieces such as spider webs flowers and flying ‘hairy-copters’ were made by participants.
A hair salon is a place where one goes to have their  haircut, styled, coloured, curled, bleached, straightened, trimmed. Some salons also offers services like threading, waxing, bath, therapies, facials.
